Maintaining Project Momentum – “Line Project” Update

My Line Project has now been up and running for four months and I have been taking images for it whenever the opportunity arises. The concept, and how it came about, is described here on my blog.

I have accumulated just over 60 line phrases that I am trying to take images to illustrate – in a cryptic or humorous way and definitely not literally. For a lot of them it’s really difficult to see how they might be executed even as a staged shot, never mind a candid. But that is part of the fun. I had never thought of “bottom line” in the way it hit me standing on a station platform in Italy (see gallery below). But that’s the beauty of an ongoing project; it gets into your blood and you can’t give it up – at least not if it’s a good one. That is why it is so imprtant to choose your project carefully.

To keep your interest going in a project like this you need to have regular successes and additions to the project catalogue. It’s the same with my ongoing hands project. That means you have to remember to shoot for your project even if you are there to do something else. After a while it becomes natural, but in the early stages of a project it is easy to forget. I make a point of processing the project successes as soon as possible and collecting them together in a dedicated place; for me that is a Lightroom Collection. Then you can see them all together, filter out the less good ones and gloat over the good ones! This maintain the momentumof your project and will spur you into doing more.

For this project it is actually quite hard to keep all the line phrases in mind and there are probably lots of missed opportunities for that reason. I have the complete list available to consult on my phone and refresh my memory before heading out to do a day’s photography.

We will see how far I get but at the moment I am having a lot of fun with it.

Why not start a project of your own?
