Gloucester Docks – Provender Mill

It’s just over ten years ago that the derelict but nevertheless beautiful old Victorian Provender Mill on Baker’s Quay at Gloucester Docks was burnt down. Two men were found guilty of arson. The site has now been redeveloped and what looks like a modern replica of the original mill has been constructed on the site as part of the regeneration of Gloucester Docks. No Comment!

When I lived in Gloucestershire this area was a favourite destination for my camera club and I am very glad to have some images taken while the old building still stood. What I particularly liked, apart from all the lovely old details, was the sign writing that had been still visible on the walls. On the one wall of the mill was written “Fosters Brothers Gloucester Mills”. On the nearby G & WE Downing Maltsters of Smethwick building, there is a list of their branches – Smethwick, Birmingham, West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Black Heath, and Walsall. All that history has now gone.
